Stephen Barrett has over twenty years experience as an award-winning restaurateur, broadcaster and wine writer. Stephen's talents lie in his unstuffy, no-nonsense approach to wine tasting, preferring to take wine to people in a modern lyrical style. He is equally happy entertaining both small and large groups, whether business or private, on wine and food pairings, wines for special events or investment. During the past four years he has acted for Supermarket giants Asda, Sainsburys, Safeway and Somerfield. Stephen can also be found representing the award winning Plymouth Gin and Dartington Crystal with tastings and exhibition work nationwide. Other clients include Wine and Spirit Education Trust, Wines of Portugal, and BRL Hardy.
A one-time award-winning restaurateur, Stephen Barrett is now firmly established in the UK wine, food and travel writer's firmament.
A member of the exclusive Circle of Wine Writers, Stephen is also a member of the Association of Wine Educators.
He sits on the panel of judges of the renowned International Wine Challenge.
With his partners Iain Ballantyne and Brian Attree he co-created and acted as consultant on the wine and food game shows, Wine Hunt on Channel 4 in 1998 and 2001.
He occasionally contributes to BBC TV, BBC Radio Devon (He is the Saturday Morning Chef!) and ITV Westcountry. Amongst others Stephen has written regular wine columns for Western Morning News, Plymouth Evening Herald and Wine and Spirit and is currently writing wine and food columns for Yes Chef!, iPlymouth, Eat Out Devon and Signpost.
During the last ten years he has acted as wine tutor and educator for the Supermarket giants Asda, Sainsburys, Somerfield and Safeway, conducting tutored wine tastings throughout the UK. Tutoring Scottish and Newcastle's managers on wine education and specialist whisky tastings for Glenmorangie were added in 2003.
In 2004 he founded Bistro One in Plymouth City Centre. He has lectured at Plymouth Adult Education: courses entitled 'Understanding Wine' now conducted @ Bistro One plus other selected locations. He has also acted as curator and lecturer at the University of Plymouth with repeated courses on Westcountry Wines and Food in 2005 and 2006.
In 2006 Stephen advised and tutored VIP clients of Brittany Ferries with a series of events aboard the flagship MV Pont Aven.
For the years 2000/01 and 2004/05 Stephen was elected President to the Torbay Wine Guild.

Stephen has also joined forces with John Hill of Wessex Continental Travel forming WineHolidays.net, specialists in European Destination Wine Holidays. Stephen welcomes enquiries from private, business and charity based clients alike.
